My engine knocks (05 Honda Aquatrax F12X Turbo)
Hey everyone!
I just bought 2 used jet skis used here in Hawaii. One of them is a 2005 Honda Aquatrax F12X Turbo. For some reason, when the engine is idling, it knocks. It doesn't happen all the time, but when it does, it seems to happen in waves. When I first cold start it, it won't knock right away. After a few minutes, it will have a few knocks here, then a few knocks there. Sometimes it won't knock at all. It seems to be very unpredictable. It never knocks when I'm throttling. Even after a few hours of running, it can have some more spurts of knocking before I get it back onto the trailer.
Where should I begin?

I have a 2002 F12x with 50 hours on it.
I'm not sure but you just described the exact symptoms that I went through just a couple months ago. Sorry to tell you but I had a cracked connecting rod that eventually broke and busted a hole in the block as well. After all this, I am now putting in my third " POS " "SBT" short block.. Take from this story what you want, I would get it checked out befor you posible blow you block just like I did. I heard the knocking was normal and it "IS NOT"!!!!!! just my 2 cents....

knocking is not normal. Off the trailer random mechanical racket from the drivetrain is.
you need to rebuild that engine right away or replace it with a pos sbt with warranty while you still have a good core to send them.

got some questions...
I don't know what a pos sbt is or even where to check to see if these used jet skis are still under warranty. I also don't have the mechanical skills to rebuild an engine of any kind, let alone a jet ski engine.
I can tell you that I put some fresh gas in, and the Honda didn't knock today. The gas that was in there was 4-6 mo. old at least. Now it is running on fresh stuff.
I'm going to try to rock the engine to see if an engine mount has failed.

Rocked the engine...
So I took Desty's advice, removed the seats and side panels, and tried to rock the engine side to side. It didn't budge.
What's next? How do I change the oil? For all I know, there is sludge in there.

I now have a engine hoist/shop crane...
So I bought a shop crane/engine hoist so that I can pull my jet skis off the trailer one at a time and do some refurb on the trailer's bunks. I also figured it might be nice to have a way to pull the engine out of the skis if I needed to.
I would really like to know how to check & change the oil on the honda because I'm almost certain it is low or doesn't have any. Would that cause an engine knock?

Are you sure it's an engine knock and not a drive train noise as Dav said. Very distinct different sounds.

hoist needs to be good for 800 pounds.
